KUN Build SEPT 2020

Build September 2020: Project Completion

After slow but steady progress the project is finalized, with the Kunga's moved in!

November 2020 - Project is completed

An evening shot reveals the beauty of the small ADU addition, which already received its first Design Award - the 2020 AIA Utah Merit Award.
The Living Room Area

Mrs. Kunga spends many hours each day on her sofa where she produces arts & craft work that is then sold by the family. After interviewing her, the students designed a sofa to Mrs. Kunga’s specifications, and a workstation with storage to her side. When working on the sofa, she has a direct view connection to the garden and main house.

The care giver gallery can be accessed via a ladder at the flower vase if required in the future.

The Kitchen

The client desired a regular kitchen in the ADU, since most cooking will happen in the main house. Mrs. Kunga usually places her wheelchair parallel to the kitchen counter when working there.

The concrete floor is exposed to the winter sun for additional solar heat gain during the cold months of the year.
Bed Room

Mrs. Kunga’s bedroom as temporarily staged for the photoshooting. She has a special bed that will be moved from the main house into her new accommodation.
Above the bedroom is a small gallery that can be utilized as storage or for a future care giver.
Bath Room

Mrs. Kunga’s bathroom with an ada sink furniture that was designed and constructed by the students. The bathroom has a tiled, flat floor to be able to roll directly into the shower.
And finally, the entire energy monitoring system is in place and online, providing us with energy data over the next years to evaluate the effectiveness of the additional efficiency measures that the students planned into the project.
