Build Week 5: More Site Demo and Campus Construction

This week brought further preparation of the site and continued construction on our panels.

Week of September 17 - Days 9 & 10

Last week we welcomed Colby to our team! He joins us with lots of construction experience, particularly from his experience with Design Build Bluff, and we couldn't be more excited to have him join us. With his help (and a hopefully quick building permit turnaround) we look forward to having this project complete by the end of the semester.

Under Colby's direction, half of the team met at the Kunga's house this week to demolish the concrete pad left behind from the old shed. It was exhausting work, but by the end of the day the pad was gone and we are one step closer to finally moving construction to site. The Kunga family is always so wonderful to us when we come, providing delicious meals and helping wherever they can.
At our temporary campus construction site this week we continued pushing forward and things are moving at a great pace! Or building gets stronger each and every day, especially this week as we are adding sheathing to our panels. It's a bit tricky to make sure our panels stay separated and that we don't attach them together completely until we move them to site. We've nearly finished the lower level sheathing and the form of our building is continuing to be defined. Our roof joists and sheathing also made great progress this week. We've got a real house here! It's turning out so well, we are all ready to move in ourselves.
We are also hard at work assembling the furniture in the shop. With such a short schedule and so much to do, we are moving forward with everything that we can here on campus. Our studio space is filled with assembled cabinetry and doors are being milled on the CNC to give the Kunga family completely custom furniture made with them in mind.
Each day we learn more and more about the process to get a building approved, how it actually all goes together, and the excitement that accompanies architecture in action!
