Blog Post Week 12: Mechanical Room, Bathroom and etc...

Week 12 was mainly about focusing on work in the mechanical rooms, bathroom details, kitchen area electricity and painting.

11/07/2018 - Day 18

There was plenty of work to be done as we arrived on site in the morning. We divided into small groups to knock out all the little tasks to help finish the interior. Chris and Dan worked on creating a cover for the water main shutoff valve in the mechanical rooms. David and Zach worked on finishing the baseboards in the bathroom in unit 9.

Joseph went around and touched up areas that still needed to be painted. Mitch focused on installing plumbing fixtures in unit 10. Jörg arrived on site later in the morning, and took the time to show students how the mechanical systems operated.

Advanced Energy Efficiency On-Demand Boiler Unit

This on-demand hot water gas boiler unit has a 95% energy efficiency compared to only 33-65% efficiency of traditional  floor standing hot water tanks (depending on the season when those are used). The condensing technology in the two stainless steel heat exchangers of the NFB and NHB units not only save energy, but reducing green house gases and lasting longer than a copper tank.
A considerable kitchen layout rearrangement was necessary in this late project phase due to the contractor ignoring original kitchen plans, which resulted in a non-functioning kitchen. We thoughtfully reorganized elements that were intrusive before, with the kitchen now having a better working path, thus enhanced better user experience in this area.

11/09/2018 - Day 19

Thursday was more or less a continuation of the list of housekeeping items we addressed on Tuesday. As soon as we arrived on site, Bennett handed us a list of chores, and we got to work doing more interior touch-up items.
Andy again tackled finishing trim and casing in both units. Scot vacuumed out an area in the unit 10 utility closet where the radiant heat piping had been chipped out of the concrete slab so that Chris could patch it will some filler grout. After that, Scot spent the rest of the day doing drywall blowout patches of holes left behind in the utility closets. Dan intermittently assisted others after completing tasks with Andy, such as, painting and rehanging a door. After successfully patching the slab, Chris also did the odd spackle, caulk and paint job on the custom access doors he and Dan had made for shutoff valves in each utility closet. Meanwhile, Mitch and David tackled electrical issues with receptacles and wiring connections in the kitchens due to the changing locations of appliances.
