Blog Post Final Week 16: Interior Updates and Facade Installation

Fight against bitter coldness at the site..

12/04/2018 - Day 25 - last day on site

It was our final day on site. We started the morning meeting with Brandan, the contractor, and discussed everything that had happened over the semester. During the meeting we were able to see the effects of the passive strategies. The temperature the night before was below freezing, yet the temperature in the house was 64˚ F.

After the meeting we divided into groups to finish some projects around the unit. David and Zach worked to test and label all of the electrical circuits in Unit 10. Dan and Chris worked on reinstalling the cabinets in the living room that we removed previously to gain access to the wall behind them to install the condensing line to the mini-split unit. Scot, Joe, Mitch, and Andy continued working on installing the Hardie Board panels on the exterior of the house.
There is a German phrase, "Ende gut, Alles gut", which means 'All is well that ends well'. Until the last day of DBSL, our studio team was striving to finish what we originally planned for this semester on the Field of Dreams site – constructing the next two units for Habitat for Humanity. Even though we were not given this opportunity by the Habitat staff, we still believe to prove that good design can actually have a considerable impact onto people's life. We were dedicated to work on the site to implement our design philosophy, and to cooperate with employees of Habitat to learn obstacles as becoming architects. Although we were often frustrated and challenged because things were not get done as originally planned, our team was able to achieve more than we expected during the duration of the term and as we progressively implemented mini steps towards the common goal. Our mission to make better living for public will never end.
